Adopt-a-Pet.com is North America’s largest non-profit pet adoption website and is fast becoming the tool to use. They will even give you results for pets who have similar search criteria to what you are looking for and send you updates when a pet you may be interested in is listed on the site.
If you have your heart set on a certain type of dog, you can always search for a “breed specific” dog rescue www.akc.org/breeds/rescue.cfm.
